As we continue to expand our bargaining team, one of the major roles of the team is to organize our members in order to get the best possible contract for all SCTA members and their students. As part of this team, you may be expected to engage in activities which may include phone banking, leafleting, picketing, attending community events as well as other activities that will make a more favorable contract possible.
As a bargaining team member your role would also be to bring your perspective and experience and that of co-workers to advocate for the best contract possible for all SCTA members and their students. With a large inclusive team there are likely to be a number of different points of view on various items. Whenever disagreements arise or decisions have to be made within our team, it is your responsibility to engage in debate while respecting minority viewpoints. We will strive to make decisions by consensus, but that may not always be possible. However, once a decision has been made, bargaining team members are expected to respect and support that decision, even if their point of view did not carry the day.
Additionally, because the bargaining process can be a formal, legal process, it is important that bargaining team members respect the protocols related to the bargaining process. While open discussion is encouraged when we are in caucus, when the employer is in the room we need to speak with one unified, disciplined voice.
By agreeing to be on the bargaining team, it is an acknowledgement that your role involves more than simply attending negotiations, and that your participation will follow the guidelines above.
