Sac County Dems Admonish School Board President

SHARE

Last night (October 10), the Sacramento County Democratic Party overwhelmingly passed Resolution 2019-23 “Admonishing School Board President Jessie Ryan for Misleading the Public regarding the Financial Status of the Sacramento City Unified School District and Leading an Anti-Union Campaign Against the Sacramento City Teachers Association.” The vote was 30 for, 12 against, with 3 abstaining.

The SCTA Executive Board and the SCTA Rep Council unanimously supported the resolution (with one abstention at the Rep Council).
The resolution points out that by backtracking on our collective bargaining agreement, Board President Ryan is depriving students of lower class sizes and additional resources in our classrooms.

It also points out that Ryan and Superintendent Aguilar received highly critical communication from the CEO of California’s Fiscal Crisis Management Assistance Team (FCMAT) Mike Fine that called into question budget assumptions and the District’s potentially illegal practice of discussing items in closed session that should be conducted in the open. Ryan and Aguilar also knew about the District’s failure to count 730 students–a $16 million budget mistake–but failed to inform board colleagues and the general public.

The resolution “demands that [Ryan] immediately takes all steps necessary to honor the SCUSD/SCTA contract, obey the law, and cease the anti-union, anti-teacher campaign against SCTA; and leads the Board in honoring commitments to students and educators.”

We appreciate the strong support from the Sac County Dems!
